You sign it, so you own it. A draft from any tool, or from a paraplanner, needs the same careful read. Here is a checklist.
Start with the client
- - Does the draft match the fact find? Names, ages, income, assets, debts, goals.
- Are the client's goals and circumstances described the way the client would describe them?
- Has anything changed since the fact find was taken?
Check the numbers
- - Can you trace every figure to a source (platform, product disclosure, fact find)?
- Are product details, fees and projections current?
- Do the totals add up?
Check the advice
- - Does each recommendation follow from the client's goals and circumstances?
- Are alternatives and trade-offs explained?
- Would you give this advice if you had written every line yourself?
Check the paperwork
- - Are the disclosures and warnings your licensee requires all there?
- Does the document pass your licensee's own checks?
- Does the file show how the advice was formed?
Then
- - Read the whole document once, not just the parts you changed.
- If anything looks odd, check it against the source before you sign.
- Keep a record of what you changed and why.
This is a general checklist, not legal advice. Your licensee's requirements come first.
